Most students wish to rush off to the USA, Canada, Australia or UK for studies in Medicine. However, Germany is still one of the best in terms of quality of education and for the fact that you pay lower fees. So, how do you get into a medicine course in Germany? Be mentally prepared

It will be six tough and grueling years in Germany. You will be required to study and carry out hospital duties. In addition, you may need to work part time to support yourself. It is physically, mentally and economically challenging. Even if you work part time it will be difficult to support yourself on what you earn so you must have personal finances too. You will need Euro 10000 at a minimum to cover living costs.

Knowledge of German language

Perhaps this is one barrier that prevents students from considering Germany for medicine courses. One of the requirements to study medicine in Germany for international students is that they must complete levels A1, A2, B1 and B2 from a recognized German school. The requirements are the same to study medicine in Germany for Indian students. In addition, Indian students must be fluent in English as well.

Permit and visa

Students intending to pursue study in medicines in Germany need to obtain a regular student visa and also a residence permit or deficit certificate that determines eligibility in German job market.

Apply for admission

You will need to put together papers relating to your educational background and work experience, get them translated and submit to the universities. This is best handled by an agency specializing in admission for medical studies in Germany. They provide best guidance and assistance on the process as well as universities where you stand a better chance. You may find it advantageous to have TestAS exam certificate and also get Test for Medical Studies certificate.  Applicants must have a background in chemistry, physics and biology. The process of application for admission should start at least a year in advance. Some universities charge nominal Euro 300 per semester while some will charge fees of Euro 3000 per year.  Some universities may ask students to undergo one year preparatory course.
